It’s not vibing well with me, but I tend to be overly cautious. It’s pork loin with an expiration date of 12/21. Been in my fridge for a day. I opened it and it didn’t smell great, but it didn’t have a scent or look to it that screamed it was rotting. Sometimes I can just smell the meat more, but this did make me pause and wonder if it was an okay smell. It was not pleasant, but not the worst.

Put it in my slow cooker on high (I was going to do high for the first hour) in sugar free root beer. I’ve done this many times to make pulled pork.

It just developed gross dark foam within 10 minutes. It is quite fatty. I don’t know. I’m feeling like I want to toss it. 😬

If it doesn’t smell good that’s a big red flag

Was it room temp fermented raw pork that usually burns your mouth when you eat it out of a mason jar with a spoon?

If you’re questioning it, toss it.

Smell is one of the best indicators we have to tell us if something is off!

If it was in one of those vacuum sealed bags, those often give a smell. Like ribs, etc often come in those and can have a mildly eggy smell? But they’re not spoiled. You’re a week and a half from the expiration date, right?

Anytime meat doesn’t “smell great” in the trash it goes. Not worth it.

  7. Could be boar taint?

I’ve noticed recently that some pork, esp vac sealed pork, has an almost barn yardy lamb smell to it

Sometimes I find myself asking if it smells alright. But in most cases it should be pungent and sour and almost give a gag reflex. Not saying it can’t still be bad if it doesn’t have that smell but in most cases safety is the better choice.

A good way to get to bearing is to open a fresh pack of pork butt or chops and make sure they’re from a good source and give it a good smell. It shouldn’t smell bad, but it will have an odor that may not smell tasty so to speak but it should be a fresh/clean pork smell.

If there is any white liquid pooling around the meat it’s most definitely bad.

Well, it started smelling WORSE when cooking and didn’t behave as any pork I’ve had before. Kind of aggravating. I know it was stored correctly at my home, but wonder if something happened to it beforehand.
