Our wine group had a champagne and caviar end of the year celebration last night and it was truly wonderful! The only red that was served last night was this 1987 Caymus, which was a blind.
I was lucky enough to guess it correctly, it’s the first blind I’ve ever gotten 100% right, although I will admit 1987 was an educated guess.

TASTING NOTES:
Caymus – Nothing like modern Caymus. Napa in its prime!! Seriously, what happened to these guys? This wine was alive for its age. Filled with red fruit, oak, cedar, turned soil, and a bit of sour cherry. Medium bodied, tannins were fine, soft but abundant. Super brickish, garnet/tawny in color. I found it to drink every bit of the 13% ABV it is, and would have guessed it higher.
Lovely bottle in its prime right now. Anymore age and I fear the fruit will start to disappear.
Loved the OG price tag on this one.

1994 Domaine Carneros – I was astonished at how good this was for its age. Full of mocha, coffee, smoke, baked stone fruit, with a little salinity on the finish. Some of the citrus fruit was still there but it played second fiddle. Little moose, but what was there was fine and danced on the tongue. Stellar!

  1. I’ve heard Caymus used to be legit back in the day, now it’s overly manufactured.
