LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Although most people think of gifts for children over the holidays, there are more than 800 seniors on the South Plains who could use some Christmas cheer.
That’s why Lubbock Meals on Wheels is providing the essentials through its Senior Secret Santa program.
These gifts include blankets, toiletries, socks and some specific gifts the seniors asked for.
Meals on Wheels volunteer, Belinda Alexander says this cause is near and dear to her heart.
“To be able to get out there and offer them some joy, especially to those who aren’t able to get out this time of year and maybe feel really alone and isolated,” Alexander said.
Lubbock Meals on Wheels Executive Director Lisa Gilliland says they want everyone on the South Plains to have a happy holiday.
“For a lot of our clients this will be their Christmas, so us getting to bring a little Christmas to their home and the community partnering with us to do that really makes their Christmas special,” Gilliland said.
These gifts are hand delivered to the homes, bringing not only essentials, but companionship to Meals on Wheels clients.
“They are a wonderful bunch of people,” one senior said. “I have never met a better bunch of people than the ones who have come here, I really appreciate everything they do for me, and I think they are great.”
Gilliland says none of what they do would be possible without the help from the community.
“Every single day it takes 77 volunteers to come in here and get the hot meals out,” Gilliland said. “So, without the community support, without our volunteers we could not take care of our neighbors the way we do now.”
