RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Bridging RVA is working to make Christmas a little brighter.

They need your help to bring their annual Christmas Day dinner to life.

All of this is to ensure everyone has a warm meal during the holidays.

“We have for 10 years provided the community Christmas Day dinner, and it’s for anybody that may otherwise be alone on Christmas Day,” Lee Ann Sawyer, Executive Director of Bridging RVA.

The nonprofit is preparing to bring Christmas cheer to thousands in the community.

“It’s important to us because we think anyone who wants to be with someone on Christmas Day should have that opportunity,” Sawyer said.

Sawyer and the team are preparing for their 10th Community Christmas Day Dinner at Congregation Beth Ahabah at 1111 West Franklin Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The nonprofit was established in 2014 and has grown thanks to small businesses and churches lending facilities and volunteers, which are still needed.

“We always need volunteers; one amazing thing about this initiative is the desire for people to serve. It’s people wanting to do something good at Christmas time,” Sawyer said.

Sawyer said the work begins one week before Christmas.

“We’re going to receive 900 pounds of turkey, and that is delivered to our friend and supporter, the Altria Theater, and they store it for us and, as it gets a little closer, slice it for us,” Sawyer said.

Then, they will add other sides, like mashed potatoes, to serve more than 3,000 people.

Not only will there be food but also toys for the little ones who may not have had a chance to get something underneath a tree this year.

“Many kids that comes in is going to get to come in and pick up a couple of brand-new toys that have been donated throughout the year so that nobody leaves empty-handed, no child because not every kid in our community is going to get a toy on Christmas morning,” Sawyer said.
