PSA to all you oven proofers, a reminder to check your oven before preheating.
Totally forgot this was in here…RIP my bread…and my bowl.

Ideally NEVER EVER put anything in the oven that’s not specifically designed to be there. This is how house fires start.
At least leave a note so you know something is inside.

This was how we lost a lot of lego and a plastic biscuit tub. To be fair the culprit was 3 and thought that everything that went into the oven came out as food.

When I lived in shared housing I always put a piece of tape over the button to set the temp + an end time. Never had an issue

That dough proof setting will do me in one of these days

I have a little oven magnet that’s shaped like a jar and it says “dough not turn on the oven” – I found it on Etsy 😂

I went grocery shopping one time and there wasn’t a lot of room for everything as I was unpacking everything so I put the giant back of Jolly Ranchers in the oven just to get it out of the way. I forgot they were in there when I was preheating the oven for I think a homemade pizza. The smell was what alerted me and I was able to save about half the bag’s worth.
Now every single time I turn the oven on I open the door and look in, even if I’m just hitting the Proof button.

i like to think of my oven as a loaded weapon at all times, and i never turn it on without checking the chamber.

This is how our first sourdough starter and fermentation lid ended up. That oven comes open every time we glance at it now

I honestly don’t know why anyone stores things in the oven. I’m using mine all the time.

I’m always shocked that people don’t check their oven or take the stuff out first lol good luck

I put a post-it over my oven controls when I have something in there. No way my distracted brain is going to save me

I’ve made it a habit, open door, check for meltables, turn on oven. Most times it’s sheet pans but I always check nevertheless. 👍

I always turn the oven light ON as a reminder. So far so good

I always turn my oven light on, so I can see that there’s something in there. I know not every oven has a window though, so that wouldn’t work in those cases.
Also when I was a teenager my mom turned on the oven in my older sister’s apartment to make something…not knowing she had shoved a whole bunch of dirty dishes in there (because the sink and countertops were already full of dishes and other things). There was soooo much melted plastic and to this day I religiously check my oven before preheating, just in case someone put something in there or I did and forgot about it.

Oh no! I do occasionally find trays in the oven, but have not (yet!) melted a bowl

I did this last week with some yeast rolls I had proofing. The *one time* I don’t put a post it note on the oven. 🤦♀️
Fortunately, they were just in a muffin tin with a damp towel on top and my nose realized it before anything caught fire. The rolls actually turned out pretty well.

Happened to one of mine 😔 Mom started the oven and the plastic top to the bowl melted right onto my proofing sourdough. Now whenever I’m proofing anything in there I put a sticky note on the oven saying “Baby in oven”

After my wife cooked my rising dough we have a new system: I put a sticky note in the controls for the oven.

It’s a rite of passage.
