RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) – Concerned Citizens of Logan County is making sure local families have a brighter holiday season with its second annual Cheerful Christmas program.
The program provides Christmas food boxes to families in need, filled with everything required to prepare a holiday meal, including ham, potatoes, canned goods, rolls, pie, buttermilk, and eggs. Families were nominated by local schools, the Department of Community-Based Services (DCBS), Life Skills, and Life Choice Pregnancy Center.
“This program’s impact on Logan County is going to be a great one this year,” said Rachel Newbury, a board member of Concerned Citizens of Logan County. “Some of our citizens are having trouble deciding whether to be able to provide a Christmas dinner for their family or pay bills. This gives them some relief to where they don’t have to make that decision.”
The effort was made possible through contributions from local businesses, including Logan Aluminum, Kauffman Metals, Modern Woodmen of America, and Clay’s Auto Body. IGA also supported the initiative by providing discounted food prices. Chandler’s Junior Beta Club also held a canned food drive to help fill the boxes.
“It’s always really good to see the businesses come together to help support our citizens of Logan County to help them in a time of need,” Newbury said. “We see this especially during the holidays with people really wanting to get out there and help a lot.”
Boy Scouts of America Troop 303 volunteered to pack the boxes for distribution, highlighting the organization’s belief in the importance of community service.
“A scout is supposed to be active in the community and help out where we’re needed, and that’s what we’re doing,” said Preston Moberly, scout patrol leader for Troop 303. “If we don’t reach out and help everybody, we’re not doing anything. That’s what communities are built for — for people to come together, work together, and live.”
The selected families can pick up their Christmas food boxes on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and again on Thursday, Dec. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Concerned Citizens of Logan County building.
