PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – Dozens of Petal-area families are getting some extra food for the holidays, thanks to the Petal Children’s Task Force.
Friday, that organization distributed 200 holiday food boxes in an annual drive-thru event at the organization’s headquarters on South George Avenue in Petal.
Vegetables, bread and other items were loaded into cars by Petal Police Department officers and the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Volunteers from Extra Table also pitched in.
Each food box recipient was required to have children living in their home.
“You’ve got to have kids in your home, because it’s mostly peanut butter, jelly, pop tarts,” said Demaris Lee, Petal Children’s Task Force executive director. “We did give soup and everything, but this year is geared toward the children, because they’re the ones that are going to be home for two weeks.”
The Petal Children’s Task Force provides food to more than 750 families and dozens of members of the homeless community each month.
The organization was founded in 1989.
