Agriculture reporter, Eliza Petry, begins her Ag In an Instant looking at the price of grain. On Friday, December 20th, March corn ended at $4.46 and January soybeans ended at $9.75’2.
While every week Eliza touches on the price of grain, you may be wondering what the grain is used for. On any given day, she would tell you corn is made into livestock feed, ethanol, and some foods. But today, she reports on a fun, new use for corn, beer!
The Illinois Farm Bureau has collaborated with Destihl Brewing in Normal, Illinois to create ‘Roots lager.’ The beer is brewed using grain from a farm bureau member’s family farm in Knox county. While you can enjoy the lager at Destihl’s beer hall and restaurant, it will also be available at select retailers. Cheers to that!
With Christmas among us, we can most likely predict what is on your Christmas meal plate thanks to research.
If you take a look at the most popular Christmas dishes in the U.S., you would come across a lot of potatoes. In fact, the number one dish is roasted potatoes with seventy-six percent of American families planning to have the side on their plate this Christmas. That totals to 250 million roasted potatoes. The second spot was also the starchy vegetable, but instead mashed potatoes. Seventy-fix percent of people will enjoy them on the holiday.
The top potato producing states are Idaho, Washington, and Wisconsin. Collectively the three states harvest just under 16.4 billion pounds of potatoes. So as you have a tasty Christmas, don’t forget to thank a farmer.
