And today it went off. It’s been pretty slow the last couple months (years) because she’s been dormant for so long. Just lately we’ve had to put people on-call on the schedule because of lack of business. It really sucks because I work with the most amazing people in the world, and it can be tough out here.

I got the news this morning on my day off and rushed up to see. I’ve never seen lunch this busy, ever. It’s a little intimidating; I haven’t worked here while there’s been lava. But I also can’t wait, and our staff is gonna be doing so great.

What’s the largest thing you’ve thrown into it?

  2. Someone complained it was hot in the kitchen, now they’ll feel some real heat from the volcano!

Y’all serve chocolate molten lava cakes?

  5. katylovescoach

We were there two months ago just hoping for a little action so of course it happens after we’re gone

Fabulous exit strategy for owners. That insurance claim is gonna be great.

Man, ya’ll had a crazy ass bartender when we were there for dinner in Jan of 2020. White guy talking about hunting boars. Maybe even had a necklace of tusks. What a great night!

Ha! That’s nothing.. I’m head chef at The Restaurant at the Edge of the Universe.

  10. ApeMoneyClub

Don’t get too close to the edge, or you’ll be in a lava trouble, mister.

We stayed at Kilauea Military Camp just after Memorial Day 2022 and it was a erupting but nothing like this. Looks exciting, stay safe.

  12. So how often is “i swear to god im about to jump in and become island soup if this table does xyz” used?

How close can you sit me next to said active volcano? 🤑🤑

  14. FixergirlAK

I’m freaking jealous, our volcanoes have been silent lately.

  15. pgabrielfreak

Tell the truth…do you roast food over the volcano and charge extra for that?

  16. Wait is that the volcano or your restaurant behind you?

my mom and her friend had lunch there about two years ago while i hiked around the entire rim along the (closed) trail and broken road that used to go around it. it was fucking awesome.

I wonder how many straws, chopsticks, etc. you would need to light a joint off that bad boy without being immolated.

I was there in September everything was really good thanks to you and your team!

  20. sub_Script

I’ll be there in September and will stop by.

  21. MidnightAkane

See my dad ate there like 4 days ago
And the whole thing just freaked him out that he could have been there for that

  22. KayBeeToys

This shot has big “and they collected the camera from his body, miraculously intact following the eruption” energy.

That’s awesome. My wife and I stayed overnight in Jan 2017. Looking at the crater glow at night is mesmerizing. Earlier we took a boat trip off the coast and watched the lava pour out into the ocean. Top 5 all-time experiences!

  24. justredditinit

Please tell me you have lava cake on the menu.

  25. Aggressive_Walk378

Ok, ok, we’ve played the floor is hot lava for years, this is not a drill…. It’s the actual floor is hot lava

  26. yesitsmecin

OP I had lunch there last month, it was great. Servers were lovely. I’m shocked you aren’t busy because wow what a view. Wish I was there now having a beer and watching the flow!

  27. I know you’re probably considering jumping in, but let me tell you, it doesn’t get better.

  28. fritzie_pup

Man.. Was just there not 3 months ago and wanted to see lava flowing!

All I got to see was steam farts.. But those vents are pretty damn neat and fuggin’ hot!
