LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Volunteers are prepping, packing, and delivering 281 Christmas meals to Lexington’s homeless community staying in motels during their emergency winter shelter program.
Ginny Ramsey, director and co-founder of the Catholic Action Center says the entire effort took 56 volunteers, including cooks, bakers and delivery elves.
Delivery elf Dave Kratzer says his family celebrated Christmas early this year. On Wednesday, they decided to do something for their community.
“Our goal is just to let people know that there are some people who care. And we just want them to feel, in a small way, seen,” Kratzer says.
Ramsey says the teamwork she’s seen shows how much Lexington locals care about one another.
“The Catholic Action Center wouldn’t exist without the folks who are in this community who have such compassion and don’t mind stretching themselves, like on Christmas,” Ramsey says.
Ramsey says one meal can make a big difference for hundreds facing homelessness in Lexington.
“As we all struggle and look for more permanent solutions, little things like a special meal on Christmas day [and] an elf knocking on their door and telling them Merry Christmas,” Ramsey says.
The emergency shelter programs only last through the winter and they’re completely full.
Ramsey says there are 124 motel rooms within the city’s program and Give Kids a Home Program.
