My first Grange, acquired as a bin end from the Wine Society a few years ago when they were selling them at the ridiculously (for a Grange) cheap price of about £170. It’s been in the cellar since then but that nowheresville between Christmas and New Year seemed a good time to open it to pair with our beef wellington.
On the nose, a big hit of blueberry and sweet soy, then some damson and date, a hint of candied orange. As it evolved more ginger, cinnamon and clove. Elevated and heady.
Palate was concentrated and surprisingly fresh. Quince, black and blue fruits, a delicious garrigue-like savouriness on the mid-palate, black pepper and ginger. Really well-balanced, paired beautifully with the food, developing a little forest floor and mushroom notes as it developed. Long, layered finish. A really pleasurable experience.
It would cellar well for another 5-10 years but we were glad to have opened it now.
Happy holidays everyone!
