COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The Knights of Columbus are hosting its annual holiday dinner for Fort Jackson basic trainees and drill sergeants tonight who weren’t able to make it home for the holidays. It’s a holiday tradition for Basic Trainees the Knights enjoy putting together every Christmas.
“For us, it’s all about giving back,” said Michael Motta, a Fateful Comptroller for the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree
Motta says this is why the Knights of Columbus prepare their freshly cooked Christmas dinner every year for Basic Trainees at Fort Jackson. He came in along with others from the organization around 8 am Thursday to begin preparing that night’s dinner.
He gave WIS a sneak peak of what’s on the menu for Basic Trainees and Drill sergeants.
“We’re cooking a spaghetti dinner that will have meatball, sausage,” Motta said, “We’ll have a nice salad for them and a really nice cake in the shape of an American Flag. It’s always really nice.”
Motta says the Knights of Columbus prepared to feed roughly 225 troops Thursday.
This dinner is an annual tradition that dates back more than 20 years.
Motta explained the importance of giving back to basic trainees who might not be able to go home for the holidays.
“A lot of these troops can’t get home for Christmas,” Motta said, “They either don’t have a place to go, or it’s too far, or they don’t have enough time off to get home and back in time, so the least we can do is give them a home-cooked meal for Christmas.”
Motta says he plans to be serving Basic Trainees Christmas dinner again in 2025.
