Just picked up a Pittboss Austin XL as my first smoker/grill. What things should I try, any tips, or any other advice?

Get ready for all the disappointment… rust will bubble up from under the paint due to the terrible surface prep… the internal heat shield rusts so fast… the internal heat shield brackets rust and are not replaceable as they are welded to the chassis… the screen is garbage, the controller is garbage, the thermometers are garbage, the burn pot will rust out, the grates will rust out, the ignitor will burn out and pit boss will probably never answer the phone during the entire 5 year warranty period… and if they do answer, you will be placed on hold until you hang up. i seem to be the only person that hasn’t had a problem with the auger jamming, but i store my pellets in air tight containers with a dessicant bag… also scoop them instead of pouring them to prevent broken pellets and dust from causing problems.

    Enjoy.

Congratulations, hope got a good deal on it.

Pay attention to brand of pellets you use. I’ve found most flavor comes from pellet manufacturers that only produce pellets, such as brands like Bear Mountain, CookinPellets, LumberJack, etc. Store or grill branded pellets do work, but that’s all they do, it’s not as flavorful, etc., as other brands mentioned above.

Happy smoking! Be prepared for an update to grill in a number of years yet enjoy what you have now!

I’ve loved mine, a little TLC here and there but leave it covered when not in use and it should treat you well.
