Stopped buy a random store today on my way home and saw this 2013 Copertino sitting on the shelf for $17. Copertino is a small DOC in Puglia that is most known for its reds made from Negroamaro, a grape that produces some of the better value reds in Italy (IMO). This wine is a great example.

Pale ruby in the center, fading to a pale garnet, almost tawny color. On the nose: lovely wild cherry followed by balsamic, very ripe tomato, oregano, clove, allspice, and a touch of basil. On the palate you have to search a bit but there’s florality made up of dried lavender and crushed violets. Also, some beautiful baked blackberry and plum. The fruit is falling off but still very much there for a wine that is 12 years old. Soft tannins fade to an amaro-like finish (in taste, not texture)—herbs, blood orange peels, and medium acidity.

Can’t see this going for much longer but really cool to experience. One of the better $17 I’ve spent and will surely be going back to grab a few more (oh and yes, I am in the bath and this is a perfect bathtub wine).

I concur… and not just for wines. Not too long ago, I dropped into a tiny local liquor store in Wilmington, DE. Really just to stretch my legs after a long holiday drive. All the way in the back I found a ‘Bargain Shelf’ with two bottles of Talisker Scotch. It was labeled as 10-year old whisky, but had Tax stamps from 25 years ago. $12.00 each. I got both. It was great Scotch. 🥃 I still have a bit left.

I really enjoy that one. I think they’re released around 10 years after harvest, so the 2013 hasn’t been on the shelf all that long.
