RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT)—While many gather with loved ones to celebrate the holiday, not everyone is fortunate enough to enjoy it as much as they may want to.
Bridging RVA, a Richmond non-profit, is stepping in to help. It’s the 10th year of Bridging RVA hosting its annual community Christmas dinner.
“We do it because there’s a need. There are folks in our community who are hungry, hungry for food. Some are hungry for community and fellowship,” Bridging RVA board member Ellen Thornhill said.
Volunteers with Bridging RVA spent Christmas Day serving more than 3,000 meals.
“It’s turkey, it’s mashed potatoes, it’s macaroni and cheese, it’s green beans, it’s a roll, and pumpkin pie and cookies,” Thornhill said.
At Congregation Beth Ahabah, about 1,000 people could sit down and eat a hot meal, and more than 2,000 meals were packed up and delivered to those in need.
“Because nobody should go hungry on Christmas. Nobody should not have anywhere to go. Nobody should not have the chance to be with other people and share in the holiday,” Bridging RVA board member Lee Skimin said.
People were also able to pick out gifts for their kids or grandkids.
“So this is my fourth or fifth year of volunteering at this event. I think it’s important for everyone to come out and support the community and support people who are less fortunate,” Bridging RVA volunteer Hilary Wilkins said.
“I’m here blessing people and giving them grace, and I’m also when I’m on the streets walking or driving, I see homeless people, and I hate seeing that. So it’s a blessing to be here and helping people,” Bridging RVA volunteer Drew Godfrey said.
