Was at a hole in the wall liquor store. Would you take the risk and buy?
Store seemed warm which probably can’t be ideal for wine this old.

I don’t know – is $150 a lot of money to you? If not, take the flier.

Small biz? Maybe ask owner where they got it, how long it’s been there to try and get a sense for if it’ll be good?

$150 is not for gambling on wine if you haven’t spent that on wine before
lovable__misanthrope
I wouldn’t risk it on either for $150

Offer them $20 per bottle…. Seriously.
Kingly24
I would not. I find both Jadot and Latour to be extremely dull producers and ’97 is a weak vintage. Just my opinion though.

Hard pass for me – if you wanna spend 150 on white burg I would rather have a 1er cru or even village wine from a better producer and that was stored properly – are you sure you even like Chardonnay aged that long?

No way would I take that risk

I can smell the premox from here!

How long have these been standing up like this? Are the shelf tags so old that the text has faded? A warm store, poor storage, old vintages of OK white wines. Those are cooked…you’d be pouring them down the drain after taking sip.

Those prices are ridiculously low. Is that store temperature controlled?

Nope.

The jadot is overpriced imo for a risk like that. I bought a 2004 of that cuvee from winebid last year for $67 (it was lovely) but 150 is a lot especially for your first aged / expensive Chardonnay. If the store lets you return flawed wine though or offers some guarantee that would be different.

Boring producers, stored upright, with that much age? I don’t even care if it’s a library release, I ain’t buying it.

It’s a toss up. A gamble. Could be a hidden gem or a dumpster fire. My experience in the liquor store business tells me the cork is crumbly and the bottle has been sitting in a 75 degree environment for years.
I wouldn’t buy it because I hate losing money, and I’m a low-risk investor.
