Great to get back into blind tasting after a long holiday break.
1. Trimbach Riesling – classic Riesling. I was torn between Alsace and Australia. The intense lime flavors led me to Australia, but I should have trusted my gut. When a Riesling smells ripe and sweet but drinks tart and dry, it’s Alsace.
2. Baron de Rothschild “Saga” Bordeaux Blanc. This wine was so meh, I called it Pinot Grigio. Maybe it’s because I hated it, I let it convince me otherwise, because people who liked it called it as Sauv Blanc from Bordeaux.
3. Castello di Meletto “Poggiarso” Chianti Classico Gran Selezzione. True to itself. Called it Chianti Classico Riserva.
4. Gascon Malbec. Classic. Purple color, heavy oak, decent alcohol, tannins up front that dissipate, cherry and plum. Called it Mendoza Malbec.
5. Cafaggio Chianti Classico Riserva. Everything you expect from a good CCR. Nailed it.
6. Cune Rioja Gran Reserva. I noticed American oak but the wine was so ripe, dark, and the alcohol felt high that I was torn between California Zin or Australian Shiraz. Bombed this one.
7. Thibault Liger-Belair Gevrey Chambertin “La Croix des Champs”. Unfortunately this wine was riddled with Brettanomyces and seems to have suffered from improper storage. We could tell it was Burgundy, but that was about it. Sad face.

My group is meeting Sunday and our theme this time is ‘Bring your weirdest wine’. Typically in the past we’ve kept to testable grapes but this one is sure to be interesting! Very excited to see what everyone brings.
