Very Cringe, especially being only established since 2021. My personal icks for wine labels include screen printed labels and descriptors such as “smooth” and anything ending in “-licious”

  2. fartwisely

Anything with excessive marketing and brand vibe which tend to be prevalent at broad market grocer chains oriented to casual, lay wine drinker.

Sounds line the wine producer next door is missing a golden opportunity to rebrand as “Against the Wall Wines.”

Love what they’re going for but they missed the mark.

I have Purchased wines to try because of the label (educated guess, Cs, H3) and being a scientist. Never avoided any due to label but that Republican Red one would be instant no.

  6. that label makes me want to quit this industry and kill myself

Wow that is an incredibly crass brand name.

I imagine they’re trying to joke that the wine will last to the next generation and be something to hand down (a la Patek Philippe) – but I may be being too generous there.

Sexual innuendos on labels. Always cringe.

I’m so turned off by generational wealth, these days. I just view it as greed. The owner sounds incredibly tone def.

Here’s her description of the wine:

“Crenshaw Boulevard is a Los Angeles landmark. It runs from Mid-Wilshire to Palos Verdes Penninsula, touching South Central, Gardena, Hawthorne, Torrance, and Historic Leimert Park (the mecca of black commerce) along the way. Crenshaw Chardonnay is my second tribute to the City I grew up in, South Central Los Angeles. It represents the richness of the culture, while embodying the glitz and glam of LA lifestyle with its distinct look and flavor.

Grab a glass and “Sip Wealth” !!!”

The grapes are sourced from Lodi.

    Snoop Dogg Cali Red…

Thought about giving it as a gag gift to some of my wine snob relatives but it was too embarrassing, not being as versed as they were about wine, I was afraid that they would think I was serious.

Saw “Bespoke Sonoma” the other day at CostCo. Gross.

$12ish, on discount. Apparently the bar to be labelled “bespoke” has lowered quite a bit.

You should see their other one named, “Let Them Eat Cakebread”.

Bought for a friend at work, ”This is The Idiot Pinot Noir” 😁 But kind of makes me want to try it though…

So, I get what they are going for (Black empowerment/generational wealth) but man. How off-putting at first read.

Pretty sure this is a Black, woman-owned winemaker, and I’m guessing the name is a play on creating a lasting space in wine for women and POCs (groups traditionally excluded from the industry). Generational wealth is a main aspiration for most Black Americans, and a general cultural talking point in the community, so I get it. That said, I think the name probably only resonates to a small group and might put off people who don’t get the reference. Maybe it’s not a bad name so much as it’s a little alienating.

Anything with awards or accolades on the bottle. Instant no.

I’ve always been turned off by weird bottle shapes too- thinking of Travaglini Gattinara and La Fiole CdP for example.

  17. PoweredbyPinot

This is a black and woman owned wine in the OP. Two groups of people traditionally left out of “generational wealth”. In fact, I sort of like the cheekiness it took to give a wine this name.

Because women and people of color have also, traditionally, been kept at the sidelines of the wine industry.

Ita getting better. We aren’t there yet.

As much as I understand the criticism here, this wine is made by a Black woman for specifically other young Black likely professionals who are picking up wine-drinking but still want to support Black-owned/made products. Given I think she’s a genuine winemaker and not someone who just bought a custom crush and slapped her name on the bottle (like viarae, which isn’t bad, but really means there isn’t any black people farming and making the prosecco itself, it’s all just Gallo which I don’t think helps the wine industry), this is pretty disheartening.

Like sometimes products are clearly not meant to be for other demographics outright in terms of marketing. And maybe that’s her business – maybe she wants to appeal to young black professionals first and build a solid customer base and then see what else she can do. The palates are also kind of introductory – a fruity, light rose, a buttery Cali Chard – this is not the sort of stuff the winos of this reddit would go for in the first place and maybe that’s the entire point??

I really wish the OP had thought a little more before posting this. It’s really hard to find legitimate black winemakers in a sea of “black-celebrity” owned products. I hope she doesn’t come across this.

Any label that tries too hard to be seen is usually masking a shitty wine. There are exceptions, but that’s been my rule of thumb.
