If you light the Bernzomatic and insert under the kickash basket, it will stay in place. Makes lighting easy.

  1. I’ve done this for years. Works great. No need to stick the trigger mechanism in the egg; it’ll melt if you don’t pull it soon enough.

Bad idea. It is better for the egg to be lit at the top of the charcoal and burn down. That way only the amount of charcoal that can burn based on the airflow will actually burn. Like this, the fire will constantly be trying to light the entire stack and either the temp gets out of control or you get a lot of smoldering charcoal that makes your food taste bad.

Edit: This might be ok for a fast and hot grilling session for burgers and steak, but is a bad idea for anything longer.

Next month’s post: “How do I file a warranty claim for a cracked fire box?”

I prefer lighting from the top but will steal this for when i forget to cover and my lid freezes shut 🤦‍♂️

Back before I had a cover, I would do this if the egg was frozen shut from the cold. I started putting a sheet of aluminum foil between the gaskets to prevent them from freezing. Once I got a cover, didn’t have to do anything. lol

Does this do damage if you have one of the SS ash baskets? I’m worried about overheating the stainless basket in isolated areas.

  7. That’s one way of doing it. Do folks have a hard time getting an egg going? I just light off a couple natural fire starters and walk away. To each their own.

You light your egg with that little thing? A full length weed burner connected to a 20lb tank is my go to method.
