Particularly stormy weather here in London the last few days – the cover, which I swear was firmly attached. Flew off and water got into the pellet hopper, which of course I hadn’t emptied because I was trying to get a cook finished before the storms kicked off. Pellets equal part blown up like balloons and ground to sawdust! Thank goodness that after an empty, the auger still goes. Note to self: always empty hopper…

Been there, done that. It’s a bit of a pain to clean, but also just the cost of doing business in the pellet world. In my case, it’s usually just an excuse to do a whole-unit cleaning, which I need to do more often anyway.
Empty you hopper between cooks.
Pellets will absorb moisture from the air, even when it’s not raining, which can lead to temperature inconsistencies in the next cook. And when it does actually wet from the rain it can seriously fuck up your auger
Get an air tight container and store it somewhere dry and safe from the elements
