I mustered up the courage to start selling my boules at $8 each to friends, etc in my community. Is that a fair price for this?

Yes I just look up what other bakers / bakery’s sell in the area! I personally sell mine for $10 and a friend of mine in Cali sells for $12. It’s homemade plus no preservatives etc!

That’s what I started at 6 months ago. I moved up to 10 but still accept 8 if someone gives that.

Jeez. Glad i bake my own bread. No way im paying more than a fiver for a loaf

  7. PoodleHeaven

In the food service world, to my understanding, you take the total cost of the materials/ingredients used and triple that.

  8. If people are willing to pay it, it’s a fair price.

I charge 10$ or 4 sodas (of my choice) from the hospital cafeteria. 8$ is very fair. I would bump to 10$ because it does take effort, supplies, energy, etc. It also seems somehow easier to have 10$ in cash vs 8$ for some reason.

Depends on your local market. I live in a medium COLA and I sell my plain loaves for $10 each, they’re about 880g. My flavored ones range from $12-15.

  11. ImmediateEffectivebo

Tbh it depends on the crumb

If the crumbs are instagram-ready 10$ sounds fair

If the crumb is average, i wouldnt be comfortable selling the loaves myself

    Depends on the local market.

In big cities like Los Angeles, the range is between $3.99 and $6.99. We just have so many farmers’ markets, micro-bakers and bakery shops that the market here for sourdough is saturated. the bread is the draw, but they make the real money off of pastries and cookies where they make a killing on the markups (between $5.99 to $7.99 for a single chocolate chip cookie). However, in rural areas, small towns and small cities, I see sourdough sold between $12.99 to $16.99.

See what the local bakeries and local micro-bakers are charging. Visit local farmers’ markets and calculate your overhead to work into the overall cost of what you make. If this is a side hustle, you can be looser with calculating overhead as long as you’re not losing money, but I think it pays off to keep track of cost down to the ounce of flour used.

    Good luck!

  13. If I liked the look of a $15 sourdough I would probably pay it. Paraphrasing Agent Cooper, sometimes you should treat yourself.

Think about a) your cost of materials, b) cost of tools, c) cost of utilities, and d) price of labor/time, and then price a margin on top of that, vs what you think the market can bear. If the former is larger than the latter, then it may not be worth doing.

I had a woman request 5 loaves on Christmas Eve and I charged her $7 per loaf. She got a deal in my opinion! I think I’ll be charging $10 a loaf as most in my area charge $15 a loaf

There are 4 cottage Bakers in My area that I’m aware of ,for plain loafs 3 sell for $10 1 sells for $12.

  17. No-Sun-6425

Here in amsterdam they get sold in bakery’s for $4.5

  18. Ok wait this might be an unpopular opinion but I feel like the amount of work required to make a loaf should mean we sell them for like $50. Unless you have ways to mass produce. Like a homemade loaf takes like 24 hours to create start to end, not to mention the effort and money involved in maintaining starter. It’s wild that you could bake batches and batches of cookies or cupcakes or muffins and make more money from selling those than selling a hard-earned sourdough loaf.

The other day I walked into my local market (small town in Hawaii) and saw a boule for $18. Bread is expensive here but I found that shocking. I don’t think they are going to be successful at that price.

A guy in Tallahassee sells sourdoughs for 15-30 depending on the ingredients. Very yummy though. 8 bucks seems fair to me.
