I made and decorated my first ever cake from scratch (funfetti) for my daughter’s first birthday! It’s not perfect but I think it’s a not too terrible job for the first time! I wanted to do a tester before I make it for her actual birthday party coming up soon. That one will be 3 layers instead of 2 and I’m wondering if I should pipe icing on the bottom instead? It’s also sickeningly sweet, I used the Butternut Bakery recipe, and am wondering if there is a way I can make it a bit less sweet. Any thoughts or advice? Thank you!

So impressive for your first cake! My advice to lessen the sweetness is to try a different frosting. Classic American buttercream is way too sweet for me, so I love [less sweet American dreamy buttercream from sugarologie](https://www.sugarologie.com/recipes/american-dreamy-buttercream). It’s much more buttery in flavor and so nice. I love it for a beginner because you don’t have to mess with whipped egg whites or hot syrup like any of the meringue based frostings. Give it a try!

Also, you could do a different filling to cut the sweetness a little. Lemon curd is great or even something like a good raspberry jam brings an element of acidity and tartness that goes so well with everything else. Just pipe a border/dam of frosting on top of your lower layer, spread your filling of choice, and stack the next layer. Then crumb coat and chill it well so nothing slips off.

Wow, you got the cream around it so smooth, looks great

Looks beautiful! You may have to try a different frosting recipe or type of frosting for it to be less sweet. An alternative is to cut into smaller pieces or fill with fresh fruit filling.

Such a sweet idea, and I’m sure she’ll love it! If you want the cake less sweet, you can try cutting back on the sugar, but just be careful to keep the texture right.
