May want to check/clean the heating element before using it again, it its a basket style air fryer. Looks like some of that melty cheese was melting/circulating upward into it.

Pre-melt in microwave so it sticks in place or use thin butter layer and smash cheese down to stay in place

I melted cheese on a burger patty using an airfryer yesterday,.
Basically my setup was the bottom bun the patty, then a slice of cheese on top, then ontop of that there was a slice of onion and some pickled peppers. The cheese melted properly!
If onions and peppers aren’t your thing, perhaps find something else that could work as a proper weight to keep the cheese down.
