3 years ago, in a California basement, I happened upon a case of varying 1983-84 Bordeaux’s. I was an enjoyer of wine, but this gold mine, that fell into my lap, was the true start of my education. I sold a few bottles that I had no business drinking. Their value was far too high to ignore. But for the rest, one occasion at a time, friends, family and I would open a bottle and share in the experience together.

Well, last night, I opened the final bottle. Let me tell you, we saved the best for last. The Latour was special. I’m not sure that I’ll ever be able to taste its equal. Silky smooth and flat on the palate, followed by the longest finish that just kept going. It was art that I consider myself lucky to be able to taste.

Thank you for welcoming me into your community and playing such a helpful role in this vast world of wine and nuance. I’ll be learning for a long time to come.

  1. Latour is amazing. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. The enclos of 100 year old vines near the tower just up from the river must rank as the best in Bordeaux.
PS if you happen upon a case of 1982 or 2009 in another cellar, I will happily pop over from the UK to help you open a few!

Lovely set of circumstances for you! I fondly refer to Chateau Latour as “Long Lasting Latour”. Man, the finish just goes on and on.

That lion has been stretching for 40 years, glad he’s finally released! Enjoy!
