There is a lot of cheap sushi in Japan. Most of it at this price level is pretty low quality despite the fetishization from western weebos.

There is much high quality sushi found at chains and other “family” sushi-yas. I just got back from Sapporo today. Even the Sushi-ro there had quality fish. Try the “conveyer belt sushi” at Chitose airport. Very high quality. Better than any sushi I’ve had on the east coast of the US….at a fraction of the price. Not to say that there isn’t some nasty sushi out there…but those places usually close up shop soon.

Pretty typical fare here in Japan.

It pains me that 484 yen is like three dollars. Back in my day it was 100 yen to the dollar. Visiting here must seem so cheap now.

It’s pretty hard to get objectively terrible sushi here, even at cheaper places. Though there are certain things I won’t get at cheaper restaurants, like uni. Some places will have rice that is a bit dry or falls apart, even if the fish is pretty good.
