This was last night’s dinner.
Some I was happy with, other parts didn’t work out as well. Though none of it cost very much.
The steak was simply seasoned and cooked in a pan. It was pretty thin, so I was happy not to overcook.
The mushrooms were roasted with some wild garlic butter and finished with some seasoned breadcrumbs because the whole dish needed texture.
The rosti was a bit of a fail. Previously I’ve made pretty good rosti, but must have had the wrong potatoes this time because although the colour was on point, it was a bit sticky on the inside.
The onion puree was from the freezer, and was a nice touch.
The sauce was simply beef stock cooked down with herbs and a reduction of wine and Madeira.
I finished that with creme fraiche, butter and green peppercorns.
All in all; the dish was pretty tasty. It could have done with something green to make it look all less brown and beige, but for being thrown together on a whim, it was decent.
I was happy with the wine.
Someone left half a bottle behind and it costs the best part of £40, so that was a treat.
