Thanks to my mom’s side of the family I’m used to eating tamales which don’t look so great either if you’re not used to them, but don’t look this brown because they are made with corn masa. Now, pasteles I’ve tried in Puerto Rican restaurants, and they do look like turds, but they taste super good. There is a similar one that’s made out of fried Yuca masa, I like those too, but I forget the name, they’re stuffed with slightly spicy minced meat.

When I was a kid I refused to eat pasteles because they looked like this.
