  1. I've never known an Italian household that didn't have that same huge "salad" wooden bowl. My grandmother had one and all of my aunts had it too. We had one for years until my daughter's boyfriend put it in the dishwasher and it was forever damaged. But my daughter's boyfriend is an everything redneck American, she had to explain to him that we have things in our kitchen that came from Sicily in the early 1900s. Obviously im Sicilian, but i was the odd one in my family because I married a German. However my husband grew up in a similar home with traditional tools and knew exactly how to respect them. I don't think her boyfriend is going to last because he couldn't understand why it was such a big deal that he damaged the wooden bowl. I just thank God that my husband had cleaned our other wooden bowl that was even older, himself before the boyfriend ruined it as well. Also her boyfriend complained he didn't like olives when i made a very similar olive focaccia for lunch with some fresh mozzarella cheese i made that morning and hand sliced prosciutto di Parma that my husband sliced up with a simple Caesar salad. I thought it was an easy throw together lunch for my parents and us, when my daughter dropped by to introduce her boyfriend to my parents. My parents are Sicilian and in their 80s, so it just made sense that we stay in one house. But I couldn't get over how he damaged my bowl that went through 2 wars and 3 generations like it was no big deal and easily replaced. Sorry for the rant, i just saw your bowl and needed to share.
