Sorry, fairly new to reddit and couldn’t figure out how to add text to the post. I do poke holes in the bottom layer of icing, do the squiggles before flooding, and sometimes even both! But I keep getting craters on the frames. The “lens” is fine. I’m using frankenfrosting. Any advice?

Make your red a little thicker. It helps prevent craters

You can fix cratering the a delicate touch of some red icing and a paint brush. (Just an fyi)

To prevent craters, you must apply your second layer of icing just after the first layer has crusted over. If the first layer gets too dry, it causes craters in the second layer.

setting cookies in front of a fan while they’re drying is seriously such a game changer!! i almost never poke holes or pipe squiggles, and i often put my design on the bases once they are completely dry (although it does work better if the bases are NOT totally dry). the fan will help to crust the design before it has the chance to crater. i can’t really speak for frankenfrosting as i’ve never used it, but i use scratch royal icing and i just place the drying cookies in front of a small tabletop fan and haven’t really had any issues since! its also a great tool to help speed up the process! i think a thicker icing consistency would also be helpful! ☺️
