Had a family dine with us the other night who self described themselves as 'cashed up bogans'. They asked for a recommendation for big Aussie Shiraz at any price point and i came up with this.
He loved it, but told me he really only wanted 1 glass of red (to go with his 1 glass of 13' Dom) and said i could take the rest for myself.
This wine had been on my bucket list for years and I'm so glad i was able to try it.

This is as good as Australian wine gets, heady aromas of black currant, dark chocolate, mulberries and slight pepperiness dominated the first sniff. On the palate it was unbelievably rich, concentrated, grippy but with some fresh acidity which helped balance the 15.5% abv.

The Laird sets itself apart from its counterparts like Grange and Hill of Grace by being completely unapologetic. This is Australian shiraz as so many people want it. It's bloody good stuff

Cheers 🍷🥂

  1. Wow, that’s incredible. Looks like they hardly had any! Glad you were able to step in and share some notes with us.

I love Torbreck, The Laird is well out of my price range but they really do offer quality at the lower price points as well.

Damn, and from the Dave Powell era too. I’ve had only the Descendant and Factor. Must have been an absolute monolith of beauty.

  3. 2010 was a cracker year for Barossa shiraz, I have a 2010 Grange in the cellar that I’ve been eyeing off for a while now.

Dave Powell era torbrecks are nostalgic for me. My dad loves them so I keep a case of old runrigs at home to be opened once a year on his birthday. Hopefully he gets to outlive my collection of bottles so that I have a reason to track down more of them
