A few folks asked about the recipe – I used an apple pie recipe mixed with the topping from an apple crisp recipe.
Crust is 3 tbsp each shortening and butter, 1 cup flour, 2 tbsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt & water. If I’m using sweeter apples I’ll reduce or skip the sugar, but I prefer tart apples with a sweet crust.
Filling is 2 Granny Smith apples tossed with 2 tbsp sugar, then put in a colander and let sit for 30 min or so. Once most of the water is drawn out, toss with 1 tbsp each cornstarch and lemon juice, 1/8 tsp each ground clove, nutmeg, salt, 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
Topping is 1/4 cup flour, 1/3 cup oats, 2 tbsp melted butter, 3 tbsp brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon & a pinch of salt.
Baked in a 6.5” CI skillet @ 400 for 35 min or so until golden brown.
