L'Oiseau par Matsunaga is a French Japanese restuarant located in middle of Hakodate ran by chef Matsunaga. Trained in number of French restaurants across Japan and in France, he opened his own restaurant in 2013. The menu focuses on locality and seasonality but also includes ingredients from France. Stumbled across it when researching on tabelog and found it was bookable on their site so decided to try it out. The food bill was ¥19,360 after tax/service fees excluding any drinks, the meal lasted about 1 and 40 minutes.

The restaurant’s interior has a very contemporary and warm feel, service was attentive and servers were all very friendly. Half the servers could speak a bit English as about half the diners were foreigners. The chef made an appearance after dessert, signed my menu and then offered to take photos before I left.

I would rate most dishes as pretty good, the fois gras, and snow crab were the stars of the meal. Desserts were also excellent, love tochigi strawberries. The duck however was very tough to cut into unfortunately, the knife given was just a standard butter knife so I spent ages hacking at it.
