I have a Weber Master Touch (I say the brand in case the material it’s made from may change from brand to brand) and after using it after about 2 years, the grill grates start to look rusted, but once it has charcoal and is hot enough the stains disappear.
After grilling I always use a wire brush to clean it. Also I always have the grill covered when not in use so it can be protected from the rain.
How can I clean it to restore it to functional use where I don’t see the rust in the grates?
What usual care you have with your grills to prevent this in the future?

I’d take a big ball of aluminum foil and start scrubbing then a pressure washer to get the remaining bits.
Or do what I do and buy new grill grates every couple years because I’m too lazy to properly protect my grill
Aluminum foil
You guys clean your grills?
We wash ours after each use, my friends think I’m crazy but our grill looks great!
Fire.
With fire
You can build an electrolysis tank like what people do to restore cast iron pans.
Drill with wire brush attachment.
Clean? My grill is living on hopes and prayers. I give it a scrub with an onion some times while the coals are hot and getting ready.
For day to day u can just burn off and wipe down.
For yearly repair: Sals suds and pressure washer. U can also get stripper bits for a drill.
I also replace the grates, bolts, w/e is starting to rust beyond repair.
Fire + brush. Once it’s fubar after a few years I get a new grill.
I don’t
Power washer
I use one of those bristle-free stainless bbq brushes plus heat. Also oil on the grates after the clean and/or before the cook. I don’t worry about it much if they aren’t perfectly clean, shrug.
Just use it. Unless you have an abundance of fat that’s dripped on the bottom that could cause a flare up or off flavors from smoke, I wouldn’t worry about it. This grill looks perfectly clean to me.
I bought one of them “magic clean” grills. I grill, and when the wife does the dishes, it “magically” cleans itself! Amazing! 🙂
My grill is a tiny little Smokey Joe, so I just bring the grate inside and wash it in the sink.
Is the first photo from today and the 2nd from 1985?
Fine grid sand papper and rub with oil
For that grill I would use half onion and cook
For my weber i just shop vac the ash out every 2-3 cooks (that doesn’t fall into the catcher), and then before I cook I just use the scrub daddy bbq brush once the coals have been going for a few minutes.
Heat. Easy Off oven cleaner, the yellow can. A wire brush or steel scrub daddy. Paint scraper.
Fire and scraping it with half cut onion
