Black Kow was recommended to me. It costs $6.48 a bag.

Lowe’s has a brand called Evergreen which costs $3.68 for the same quantity.

I’m leaning towards the cheaper option.

Will that hurt me in the long run?

Buy equal amounts of each and spread them separately but equally in your garden. Do everything (other than that) the same and report back in the fall with the results. One company or the other will appreciate your feedback. ( who know how?) fun experiment.

  2. Brands aside, what’s the percentage of organic matter? Often times you’ll find a lot of filler in most bagged compost. It also depends, are you top dressing existing soil or using it as a mix in for garden bed? Volume over potency for the latter. Matters even less when you supplement with a quality fertilizer.

Man, what a bunch of bullshit…..

(Couldn’t resist! I use the basic cheap stuff every year, and it does great for me).

Black Kow is good stuff.. Unfortunately there is no legal standard for what is in these generic white bags. I’ve seen “top soil” which has the texture of crushed concrete.

I would buy the recommended brand. Buying low quality compost/soil can ruin a season. I don’t think it’s wise to skimp on the most important aspect of a healthy garden.

That brand is poorest quality. Not worth the money.

I’d probably go with the name brand. A few bucks is worth it for a small personal garden.
