First time cooking a 2 1/2 inch steak. Would you call this mediumrare? Wife and kids wouldn’t eat it because it was raw.
I'm about halfway through it in 4 hours I cant help myself. It's gotta be the best tasting steak I've ever cooked.

I would destroy this steak

Doesn’t look raw, but very on the rare side; with such a fatty cut, I’d personally also prefer it a bit further done so that the fat is more rendered.

It’s called a meat thermometer people. Then there is no question as to how done it is or is not.
Not looking at pictures from phones and reviewing on phones that may or may not have decent color rendering.
That said, much of the fat is not render, still white. So undercook from my opinion “looking at a picture”

Put it on fire to get a better sear

Very rare, fat is still white. Needed more time to render.

I’d want the fat rendered down a bit more. But otherwise I’d say that’s a damn good looking steak.

regardless of what the cook is, its always important to know who youre cooking for

The fat just needs to be rendered a lil more, personally

I’ll never understand people that don’t render the fat in their ribeyes. It’s the best part!!!

It looks good. My preference would be a hair more done, but I med rare+. Tons of folks here would love it, but I can’t say I’m surprised kids wanted a bit more.

I’d eat that but definitely would prefer another minute on each side

I wouldn’t eat that either to be fair

Definitely under. Fat is white still. For thicker and fattier cuts like this it’s essential you give it enough time to come to room temperate and a little time in the oven. Butter basting is also a good option if you don’t want to use the oven to help render all the fat, but you will need to allow it more time to rest before cutting into it.

Whether it’s medium rare or not is only half the issue.
The problem is you haven’t rendered the fat properly which is unpleasant.
Getting perfect medium rare but not rendering the fat is a bit like getting the perfect sear but not cooking the middle.
You have to do both.

2.25 inch Porterhouse, dry aged for a couple of days in the bottom of my fridge. Grilled to perfection
Yeah this is about as close to rare as you can get without being rare.

Probably medium rare temperature (low end of, looks like) but cooked too quickly to render the fat Which is also the reason it is seen as “raw” when it isn’t, or “too rare” when it isn’t
Delicious_Oil9902
Was the temp around 135 when it was done resting? If so then yes I’d call it medium rare
Gucci_Unicorns
Honestly when you have fat like that, you need to go a full medium, imo.
I find fatty bits like that super unappetizing.

That’s pretty much on the verge of still raw.. definitely wouldn’t eat myself. I like rare but not raw rare
Obi-Wanna_Blow_Me
No offense but I wouldn’t eat that. It does not look good to me.

This is straight up raw

I’m actually stunned sitting here reading the comments that people think this is cooked decent☠️ I’ve truly never seen anything like this photo
