Does it matter which side of the grates you use?

At my Lowes, every single grill has the grate shown as the ones on the right side with the pointy grate part facing up. The guy at Lowes said that’s the regular side and doesn’t think you are supposed to flip them over. All the grills I have ever used have the flat ones like the left side of the image. Are you supposed to use different sides for certain foods? Why is one flat and one has a point?

I’ve used both. Believe it’s personal preference

Flat side up. Pointy side up is for more delicate foods or vegetables.

Flat side up is a lot easier to clean

I actually contacted Weber a few years ago and the response I received was flat side up. Most stores that have them on display actually have the flat side down though.

Try both with the same food. Figure out which way you and your guests prefer it

Well I’ll be damned. 20 years+ on my Genesis, pointy up, and just did the same with the Spirit that I put together a week ago.

But if Weber says flat, I’ll have to give it a try. You know, maybe my burgers that don’t hold together as well will do better on flat.

Its your preference. Do what you want they flip over. If you want narrow or wide grill marks that’s all that really happens. IMO the pointy side is easier to clean.

Weber says flat side up. They designed it, I’ll stick with their expertise.

Flat side up to give more contact with hot grates. The pointy side pointing down allows fat and grease to collect as a drop to drip. Or if we’re the other way around the fat and grease may stay on the side more easily.

There’s always a strong debate about this. I believe it to be a matter of personal preference.

Been cooking on Weber for 30 years with flat side down and no problems but next ribeye will be on the flat side to see how it goes. Never ever occurred to me I was backwards
