Hello! Question from a newby tomato gardener.

Once a tomato turns red, do they continue to grow in size? Or are they ready to pick.

Here is my first red one of the bunch, it's probably just about 1.5 inches.

Ready to pick. Once a tomato starts ripening, some of the structures in the stem actually seal off, so the plant no longer sends nutrients to the fruit. In a heavy rain they will still crack, but that’s not the kind of “growth” you want.

  2. You can pick them as soon as they start changing their shade. I even had luck ripening totally green tomatoes that I accidentally picked or knocked off. You keep it in a bag with the other tomatoes that are ripening and they release a gas that starts the process.
