Messaging because I never figured it out either.
It’s to hold a lit match I imagine!
For holding a lit match to light your buner with when the igniters inevitably go.
I believe that is to hold a match to allow you to manually light your burners for the eventuality that the electric starter becomes corroded.

I think the chain needs to be attached to the other end. You can then stick a macht in the circular end and safely light your grill.
You could fit a match stick in there, and use it to ignite your grill if your ignition it’s broken. Or so I thought
