Was on an all day bender at SXSW and after a 2 hour long wait for a free taco and some charro beans at NIXTA I decided now would be the perfect time to venture back over to salty sows in honor of the last time I went. Last year’s SXSW. Happy hour was out of the question given the previous mentioned situation so I opted to pay full price for their sweet sweet chicken. Got there, cool vibes, ordered an app and two entrees. BBQ nachos were the special app for the day. Was a tiny bit uunderwhelmed . Huge portion, great tasting bbq and the sweet jalapeños were a nice touch but something about them didn’t hit like I thought they would. Next came the fried chicken and the wagyu burger. Chicken was crunchy and sweet just like I last remembered but again felt a bit unsatisfied. Then I reached over the table and tried the burger. All the flavors seemed to merge into one. Just tasted like meat. Even their pickles weren’t cutting through. Lastly had the cinnamon roll bread pudding. OMG. Crazy. So good. Overall had a great meal. Again very good but as someone who blows all his money eating around Austin I felt not as blown away as I did last time. Did see some crazy good looking food come out of the kitchen. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing.

Salty Sow is never gonna be the best or even one of the best restaurants in Austin. But I live in the neighborhood and I go A LOT. Their specials are unique and always great. They have good happy hour. Their food is consistently very good. Their drinks are fun and reasonably priced compared to a lot of places in Austin. Their servers give good recommendations and know their stuff. It’s a place you can be pretty sure to get a last minute table
That chicken looks yummy.
The deviled eggs 🤤
Just had the rosemary fried chicken on Tues!
BUT DID YOU GET THE DEVILED EGGS
They had a really good blackened redfish dish that was served with a side of quinoa and a tomato roasted over a fire. It was a balanced delicious dish. It was my favorite. Then for no reason they changed it so now it’s redfish with crawfish on it. There is no side. It’s so much worse than it used to be. It’s very upsetting to me. Please bring back the old red fish dish
Lived right near it until Christmas. We’d go a couple times a year, trying to make it an occasion or when people were in from out of town. It was always good but I’d always get the same thing, fried Brussels with the chicken thighs with smashed taters, because I have palate of a five-year-old. My wife would order whatever veggie thing they had. Tolerable pricing, drinks good, food good, spot good.
That looks shitty
I’m confused by this place – is it casual or a fancier vibe?
Not very appealing looking
