I rolled out a pizza far too big for the pizza peel, tried to reshape it, assembled the rest of the pizza, then failed completely and utterly to get it to slide properly off the peel and onto the stone. I feel I deserve the death penalty for this.

Don’t give up on a pizza stone. Just gotta get your size right and enough flour on the peel. Keep trying, you’ll get it eventually.
But yes, this is a travesty.
I used a stone about that size for a long time and only recently got a larger rectangular one.
