Soo, not trying to be a snob or anything but it seems like paint is not what you want on wood that you plan to use for smoking food. đŸ€·

Just picked this up from home Depot, dang jealous devil. You did me dirty. Definitely the same wood as the rest that's in the box. No paint on the box or any of the other pieces.

  1. Just use a saw to cut off the 1/4 inch of painted wood. Doesn’t really seem like a big deal.

You got scrap lumber w some paint on it. Hopefully its untreated wood. You can just split that edge off and it will be as fine as the rest of the scrap lumber

  3. FlyLegitimate7938

One place I buy wood from puts a small spot of paint to distinguish different chunks of wood.. I don’t think this is that though

Pro tip, find the closest feed store, if possible, and buy your smoking wood from there. In my experience they have better wood and it’s cheaper than anywhere else I’ve gotten it from. Think I pay like $25 for a layer of wood from the pallet, can usually get 2-4 smokes depending what is in the smoker.

So “hotter than hell” the wood turned red!!

  6. Kevin_Tanks_519

What kind of wood is that.. looks like the oak scraps i have at my place

Jealous devils lump charcoal seems ok, but all their other products are pretty shit. Clearly dressing up scrap garbage as food grade fuel. I would return that box.

  8. Home Depot has a generous return policy. I wouldn’t trust this product after seeing this. That’s just me though

  9. SnooHedgehogs353

…It said wood blocks on the box, What did you expect?

  10. SnooHedgehogs353

Just use it. That little paint will literally do nothing.

  11. grumpsuarus

Is this that hot log they used in back to the future 3

  12. knarleyseven

That’s nice wood you don’t deserve it.

  13. undockeddock

Better than the fiberglass and shit that comes in Royal Oak charcoal

  14. Jealous devil smoking wood was horrible in my experience. Weber smoking chunks are much better if you can’t get local wood instead.

  15. Disassociated_Assoc

Using painted splits really adds to bark development. and enhances the color of the cut like you wouldn’t believe. /s

giving them the MAXIMUM benefit of the doubt, paint can be nearly anything that leaves a trace but holy god they are making it hard to not look like that.

I bought a box of that garbage a couple months ago. Got home and opened it, turned around and went back to return it.

    What garbage

  18. Slunk_Trucks

You guys gonna stop buying shit like Jealous Devil, etc. B&B only, forever, all day, every day. The quality is completely unrivaled. I’ve never had any of these sorts of issues like this from their products

  19. They couldn’t just grind it up into pellets like everybody else does with scrap lumber?

  20. pm-me-your-catz

I get as many trim ends as I want from work and you paid for them.

  21. StupendousMalice

How much are these guys charging for sawed up pallets?

  22. carnitascronch

I mean, I had some unfinished oak floors installed and you can technically use those offcuts to smoke food with, though it does feel forbidden.

  23. Aggravating-Swim-392

Well crap. That’s what I can do with all the trimmings from the hardwood floor?

  24. hawksnest_prez

Some industrial shop by me has a free pallet sign up 24/7. Or
 go buy this!

  25. ExchangeWitty9456

Ah… chop it off with a hatchet, what’s the big deal?

  26. LogicalSympathy6126

What are pallets made of? I thought pine…?

  27. As others have said, this looks to me like scrap from a wood shop. Looks like it is maybe 8/4 oak that’s been through a planer. Then what you have here are the end bits that were cut off longer boards to make a table or whatever they were building. The paint is used in the lumber yard to mark stacks of boards.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but probably not a bad idea to split it off, though I’m not sure if I would bother personally.

Source: I get a fair bit of my smoking wood from my woodworking projects.

Could be wrong but that’s what it looks like to me.

If I bought this I would be annoyed by the paint and probably wouldn’t buy that brand again but nothing to worry too much about.

    Edit: wording

So I make furniture and buy wood from a local saw mill. The other day I was there and he showed me an entire cherry tree worth of wood he cut that ended up being a bad tree and it twisted and split when it dried and was all trash. He offered to give as much as I could take for free for firewood because it saved him money hauling it to the dump. That type of thing happens and some trees aren’t good for anything other than burning, so worth checking and making some contacts with some local sawmills if you want cheap or free wood. Might not be the most convenient for you since you’d have to saw and split it but it’s better than this over priced box of offcuts.

  29. Be easy, It will burn off before you get your smoker hot enough to cook on. It is likely from a pile marked with paint or it is from a hardwood pallet.
