Yours is a better cooked center but with almost no sear. Hard to tell if his crust is awesome or just burnt to hell without tasting it.

  2. hoodmayne

They have a better sear. I do prefer the way you cooked yours better, if only it had a better crust. Also the sides most definitely 🔥. What’s the orange one?

  3. Low_Jellyfish_333

Does anyone really “lose” in a steak off?

  4. TheXenon8

#1 looks way better. But I bet #2 rocks those tongue buds like no other.

People on this sub get too worked up over grey bands. #2 has one, but when you got a nice crust and the fat is rendered, it can be hard to even notice.

    Both look amazing. Great job!

  5. YerbaPanda

Only the ***other*** sear looks better, but ***your*** center should definitely be less dry, more tender and flavorful.

  6. throwra-misc1

Your temp is great but your sear is meh.

Theirs is a total mess. Overcooked and looks to be more burnt than properly seared.

  7. Important_Shower_420

I would rather eat his but yours is not bad at all.

  8. dumbledwarves

Your sear could be better, but I think the judges hate themselves. The second looks nasty. Burnt, cooked way too long, and dry.

  9. Yours has a more even internal cook. The second one has a better sear, but the meat looks dry.

  10. Master_Air_8485

Did both steaks have the sauces? Because one looks watery, and the other seems to have split. There’s a good chance that you lost because of your sauces.

  11. Enginehank

yours could have a better seer, but temp wize it looks delicious, can’t speak to the seasoning, but if that’s decently made chimichurri, You nailed it, is the other sauce romesco? I can’t tell.

The other guys straight up looks like barbecue, which is not good for a steak. if it was a brisket contest I’d give it to him right away.

  12. Electrical-Sun6267

Um. Are you in one of those mid-west places where everyone orders their steak overcooked? Because, the second one in a Missouri-Medium Rare, or as normal people call it, shoe leather.

  13. Jazzlike-Many-5404

You didn’t lose by my book. That second steak looks burned as hell and overcooked

  14. NiceRides

UPDATE: It was supposed to be judged off presentation, cook, taste & texture. It was done at my bosses house for a team builder.

Sauces for mine were a chimichurri & a cowboy butter dipping sauce.

  15. InTheSky57

Yours is dry bro. Look at the moisture on the board of his /s

You should have used hard core carnivore /s

I can’t make this make sense. I’d much rather eat your steak with no sear than that overcooked dry looking dog food he cooked. I think sear is overrated. I look for texture of beef, and flavor, especially with a bone in ribeye.

  16. Lateralus1290

People have shitty taste. Don’t take it personally. You know you won.

  17. ConfidentHighlight18

Unless it’s brisket, I don’t need that level of ‘burnt’ on my steak.

Yours could use a little bit more of a sear, but otherwise looks good.

  18. MistyWoodcock6

Maybe they’re just telling you that you lost because they want another steak and know you’ll rematch?

  19. DonJuanDoja

I love that humans have been cooking beef for over 10,000 years and we still can’t agree on how to do it right.

I think that’s why it’s called Beef, when two parties are beefing, because obviously the first serious argument in history was over how to cook a steak properly. I bet a cave man died that day.

  20. simonlegosu

Your cook is even and looks better, but your crust is non existant.

His has a big grey band, but his crust looks much better, although it looks a little burned.

My verdict is that a third, well executed steak would have beaten both of yours.

  21. TheBonusWings

Clearly none of your coworkers are on r/steak bc theyd be appalled with tHe GrEy BaNd

  22. danknadoflex

Yours is cooked better in the center but is r/nosear worthy which is probably why you got docked. No amount of chimi can bring back that sear.

  23. Parker_Fertig

Yours is cooked better, his is seasoned better. I’d rather have an okay cook with great seasoning than a great cook with very little seasoning, but that’s just my personal taste.

  24. Invalidsuccess

Your sear is lacking. If ya had a nice crust you would have nailed it

  25. John_FukcingZoidberg

1st looks under charred and the second Looks over smoked but… how did they both taste and was it a contest judged by asshats you work with? I’ve been cooking since I was 8 and I make amazing fucking food… I lost a potluck competition where I made sautéed stuffed mushrooms (butter, garlic and wine sautee for three hours) then stuffed with sautéed minced green onion, red bell pepper, bread crumbs, bacon, cream cheese and roast garlic then topped with sharp cheddar and Brie and baked in the sauté juice) and the complete asshat who won did it with Trader Joe’s meatballs in a crock pot with a bottle of sweet baby rays and a jar of grape jelly mixed together with some fucking corn chips sprinkled on top… 4 hour of love vs. 8 minutes of half assed bullshit… what a mockery of justice!

  26. EC_Owlbear

First pic looks better overall, but the charring on the second looks delicious.

  27. Kentucky_Fried_Chill

I say because your bark, the dark crust around the meat, is light and doesn’t have that caramelized flavoring. Also the send is medium well almost well and most people like it medium to well.

Yours looks much more evenly cooked and maybe the sauces were too much?
