The title kind of says it all. Besides needing a cosmetic cleaning I’m not sure how extensively I need to go about cleaning the grates and flavorizer bars versus fully replacing them. like I said, this is my first time owning a non charcoal, non travel size grill. I know letting it go on high heat can go a long way…anything else I should know?
As a bonus, drop your favorite recipe to kick off grilling season. Thanks again!

Mine says hi. It was free though.
Yours looks fine. Some oven cleaner on the grills, f bars, and grease catcher tray. In big garbage bags for a while, then hose off and wire brush it all. I used one on a cordless drill.
Simple green on the outside, then gently hose off.
Hey man nice find!! I just moved into a new (to me, real old actually) house and the former owners left this exact grill here for me! Stoked.
Look remove those bad boys, lay em on the ground and power wash. Inside, use some care with a sponge and soapy water. Rinse. Fire her up and get movin!
I’m sure you could be more thorough and others will have suggestions, but that is my move.
As to your final request: Tonight I’m about to go with asparagus, baby bok choy, and then “the trifecta”, ie chicken thighs, strip steak and salmon filet.
Hose it down periodically. Give it a good scrub. And keep it covered when not in use. I’ve had my Genesis since 2008. Still going strong with original parts.
$50 is a great price! Congrats. Looks like all the comments above already nailed what you should do to the grill to bring it back to life. The only thing I would add is once you have done all the changes and modifications to it. Let it run on medium heat for about an hour or so to burn away (season) any loose material that may have taken place during your rejuvenation of this pretty cool weber grill.
I absolutely luv my Genesis!
I use a putty knife to scrape my fire box & grease catcher & inside the lid. Oven cleaner on the grates & favor bars. A wire brush on the burners. Change the battery on the ignition button & use some dialectic grease. Bar Keepers Friend on the outside. You can get a griddle to replace the grates for cooking veggies etc & the copper mats work pretty damm good for fish. I have a V shaped drop in metal tray that I add smoking pellets to & it works Ok. Cast iron skillets & pans add a whole nother dimension to grilling!
Check hoses, connectors and joints for leaks. Check tubes for leaks and blockage.
Scrub everything.
A little tlc after a nice clean and you have a beast for a long time to come… enjoy!!
Good find! It’s in great condition after a little cleaning.
Castrol super clean and a pressure washers will remove all the crud really quick. Once fully cleaned you can inspect the grates and bars. I’d probably use them this year and watch sales on Amazon homedepot end of year for clearance pieces to replace
