A couple of nifty items of interest this week for your edification.
Naomi Whittel, CEO and founder of ReserveAge Organics, has put the benefits of 1,000 glasses of red wine into a single anti-aging vitamin tablet – without the calories or alcohol.
Whittel founded ReserveAge Organics in December, 2008, in Gainesville, Fla. and began the company with four anti-aging vitamins. ReserveAge now offers up to 16 vitamins that are available in pill, liquid, or chewable tablet form at health food stores. The company has grown to 21 employees and sells between 30,000 and 50,000 units a month.
The vitamins are based upon the medical phenomenon known as the “French Paradox.” The French eat as much fatty food, if not more, than Americans, yet they are less likely to suffer from heart attacks, diabetes and other signs of aging. After years of research a connection was made between red wine and bioactive trans-Resveratrol, an antioxidant that activates the “longevity gene.”
Whittel had a conversation about the “French Paradox” with her cousin, Dr. Eric Lafforgue, over a glass of red wine in France and together they began production. They worked with Groupe Polyphenols, an association that studies polyphenols like trans-Resveratrol at the University of Bordeaux, and then started buying the vines, seeds, stems and skin of squeezed grapes – which contain the trans-Resveratrol – from Chateau Le Payral, an organic vineyard in Southern France. To keep its freshness, ReserveAge Organics has an exclusive contract with a polyphenol extraction and manufacturing facility in France.

Dreadnought Wines, a Pittsburgh wine company is just launching in the Philly market. They are presenting a unique wine dinner featuring one of Italy’s most dynamic and versatile white varietals – Verdicchio, from the Adriatic coastal region of Le Marche.
Verdicchio is a wonderful wine to enjoy with seafood but is under-represented on American wine lists. Bonci is a masterful producer of the grape and exporter Nicola Biscardo will lead a tasting of six dramatically different incarnations (including sparkling and late harvest) paired alongside a seafood-driven menu from Chef Jeff Michaud.
The tasting will be held at Osteria, 640 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $130 per person, tax and gratuity included. Seating is limited. Seating is limited. Call 215-736-0920 for more information.
