Made a small roast to celebrate my boyfriend’s promotion, and asked how he’d like it done. He said on the rare side of medium rare. When served, he looked at it strangely, and asked if I was sure it was done. I told him it was how my family always referred to steaks as medium rare, and he said they were wrong, and I shouldn’t trust any of their advice on cooking.

Admittedly, we never really went out to restaurants for steak growing up – it was just whatever someone in the family cooked for us. What are your thoughts, Reddit? Has my family always described their steaks wrong?

That is textbook medium rare cooked perfectly. So many people don’t have a clue

  2. Old-Machine-5

This is on the rarer side of medium rare. But that’s not what he’s bitching about. He’s referring to the fact that it’s edged to edge red. Since he doesn’t see a gray band at the edges, he thinks it’s not finished cooking.

I dread having to explain this when I start dating again. I just hope whoever i’m with trusts me. I guess you could educate him but I’m not sure if he’d take that as conflict. I’m sorry, your steak looks yummy.🤤

That is 100%, spot-on, the rare side of medium rare

  4. Altruistic_Archer592

Your boyfriends wrong if I ordered medium rare and got that I’d be perfectly happy

  5. lampstaple

Call his work and tell them to demote him because he’s an idiot

  6. Looks rare to me, also did you mean to arrange it so suggestively lol

  7. VerendusAudeo2

He be crazy. He asked for the rare side of medium rare, and that’s exactly what he got.

  8. Fine-Structure-1299

He doesn’t have a clue and wants medium. Let him cook his own next time.

  9. CuriousLabrador25

That looks like a job well done on the medium rare!

  10. GoCanes2468

BF’s a bitch. Throw it in the microwave and give him some ketchup.

  11. Chiasnake

Yer Bf is feeling jelly and emasculated by your steak cooking ability.

  12. Idk the way you painted what he said makes him sound like an ungrateful / douche. It looks great to me

These pieces look exactly like what he requested. They look like “the rare side of medium rare”. I suppose depending on the size of the roast, maybe other pieces looked differently.

But moreover, YOU made him a celebratory meal to acknowledge his accomplishment. The red in the meat isn’t a deep as the red on that flag.

Does your boyfriend’s family frequent Outback Steakhouse?

That looks like a juicy tri tip 👌😎👍

    It’s perfect, you nailed it.

Honestly, tell him to make his own dinner next time.

  17. Boyfriend is wrong. And unappreciative. You cooked a beautiful roast. And nailed medium rare.

  18. Your family is spot on as well as your meat cookery. His family has no idea what they are talking about.

  19. 612GraffCollector

Career cook here. This is exactly what I expect when I ask for medium rare

  20. dumbledorky

Your boyfriend is wrong and sounds like kind of a douchebag, frankly. That’s a perfect medium rare.

  21. RunninOnMT

Wow, i’m normally like “there’s some debate i suppose”

but that’s medium rare. That’s exactly what medium rare looks like.

  22. DrawShort8830

No wonder y’all didn’t go out for steaks if you can all cook like this. Beautiful med rare

  23. SylvanDsX

That looks perfect 🤩 looks only some pieces are on the rarer side of medium rare also. Grey Band FTL.

  24. Formal_Chair3052

As a former executive chef of a Michelin star restaurant, I will tell you that that is a perfect medium rare or what one could consider a rare+ (aka rare side of mid-rare) steak. I wouldn’t kick you off the grill station….I would tell him to take a culinary course…. or hike. Good job!

  25. Zephron29

Title said medium rare and I thought, hmm, *maybe* that’s a bit generous looking at the picture, but not far off.

Then saw he wanted on the rare side of medium rare, and then I thought, yea, that’s literally what this picture is.

Your BF’s family is probably like mine (NOT ME), who go to Longhorn or Outback and order well done.

My take is that your boyfriend may lack the culinary knowledge to clearly articulate why the steak was not what he was expecting. The steak looks awesome, the crust is uniform, you’ve maximized the tender parts of the meat and I’m surprised that you didn’t get a big “thank you”.
I think that I can see a few spots in your photos where the beef is rare enough to have different mouth feel where the meat tears differently. I suspect that this is what your boyfriend dislikes.
He most likely wants it cooked a bit more well done.

If you want to hear that he’s ungrateful for not appreciating another human cooking a meal for his benefit, that’s fair.
If you want him to enjoy the next steak and care about this dude, I reccomend cooking steak at a few different temps and doing a taste test together. That’s a date night that I could get down with.

Your boyfriend is a cunt, and wrong too. That is medium rare, and if anybody ever told me that my family was not only wrong but that I should never listen to their cooking advice, they get a smack right in-between their legs.

  28. This is what he asked for but he probably meant medium and doesn’t know 🤣

  29. Known-Zombie-3092

I’m a blue girl, but I’d eat this. You cooked it right, OP.

  30. ButtyMcButtface1929

You nailed it. Your boyfriend doesn’t know what “on the rare side of medium rare” means.

  31. Disregard his statement and absolutely trust your parents advice on cooking, that’s perfect medium rare.

  32. Jisan_Inc

You should show your boyfriend this thread and comments.

  33. DormantLime

He’s wrong, which is fine, but he insulted you and your family when you tried to do something nice for him, which is not fine.
That’s the rare side of medium rare. I hardly ever eat steak and prefer mine medium, and even I know that.
He needs to learn how to say thank you and ask nicely for it to be tossed back onto a frying pan, not that mess of a reaponse.
