My boss thinks this is appropriate, messages 10 minutes prior to my normal shift start telling me she needs me to work. She was there at closing the night before but said nothing. I was already out of town when I got this. Then she proceeds to message my family as well. Inappropriate AF especially at $9 hr, so glad I have an interview soon because I'm done having to pick up managements slack on my days off but never getting any help when I'm the one short staffed.

$9/Hour is diabolical.
People don’t quit jobs. They quit management.
Look out for yourself; like you’re doing!
the proper way to say what they said : CAN you work tonight? and you say no lol, or choose if you want.
Hay is for horses. Fuck off boss.
“The expectation that I’m supposed to be on call to work in this scenario with such little notice is worth $17/hr minimum; I wasn’t scheduled so I’ve left the region for my day off.” substitute in whichever dollar value makes you feel more comfortable, but not less than this.
In turn, you need to make sure you are worth that much. Plan everything in advance. Study for your personal development and creativity/satisfaction in yourself; not just for good general job performance. Show up early 98%+ of the time. Schedule your requests off at minimum 1 month in advance, if possible 3+. Cover others when you can.
Sorry, Boss. I’m not available. Can you imagine if you tried to call out 10 minutes before your shift was scheduled to start? It would never fly. Let’s not even talk about that rate of pay is criminal in today’s market. If the reverse wouldn’t be ok, it isn’t OK for your boss to demand. A request backed up with a small monetary incentive? Maybe. Demand? Go Fork Yourself.
$9 an hour? make it $18…
‘Sorry boss been drinking’ done. Good on you for looking elsewhere.
9… dollars???
why are you working a job for $9/hour in 2025 lmao unless it’s a serving position then i would understand, fuck that tho i’d have been left
9/hr isn’t even minimum wage. What fresh hell is this?
How does she have your families contact info? Did she go into your emergency contact just to get you to come in?
If someone messaged my family in these circumstances they’d be blocked without an explanation or a word of reply. What a total asshole.
Hay is for horses.
Not even a hi or a hello.
No context needed, every day that I remembered I had to work I wanted to walk
The place i worked at 7 years ago did that same thing to me. Unfortunately for them it was a vacation I had planned out with the managers, so when the lesser managers tried calling me in I just laughed and told them no
One of the reasons I left the industry: calls at the last minutes to work when it’s busy or someone else no shows; getting sent home early or called off during the slow season.
Easy solution, reply “no”
Tf
I would leave based on being managed by someone who texts like they were educated by a worm.
I only read as far as that wage.
hay i just met you, and this is crazy, so heres my number, call me baby
Bro what are you even losing if you quit? I don’t think I could find a job for $9/hour if I tried.
OP, your time is worth more than 9 dollars an hour.
If you can find a nearby Waffle House I belive their stating pay is 13 raising to 14 or more after a month or less.
There’s also structured raises that top out at around 16 or 18 an hour plus bonuses on occasion.
A while back when i worked their night shift I was making base pay plus overnight plus shift leader along with direct tips and bonus pay when I was called in or asked to stay over even if the overlap wasn’t a full double shift.
You deserve better than what they offered.
You have to say No the first time and every time after that.
Managers tend to keep doing what has worked for them in the past. You don’t have to say yes
Arkansas, fucking ARKANSAS with some of the worst labor laws in the nation has a minimum of $11….
“Can’t tonight’
Context: I didn’t go in, didn’t respond because I didn’t even see the message until closing time so why would I? Contacted family that “helped me get the job” so they knew one another prior. It’s pretty ridiculous that this ever occurred in any field bc I worked in medical for 10 years and never had this happen there.
$9 per hour is a kick in the nuts.
9/hr???? wtf?
9/hr???? wtf?
The pay is bad. The message is bad. The timing is bad.
Contacting your family is WAAAY the fuck out of bounds. You should notify THEIR boss.
Tell this person “Hay” is for horses.
> Then she proceeds to message my family as well. Inappropriate AF especially at $9 hr
drop the location, we need to start having talks with these folks 😀
“Neigh chance”
$9 an hour? LOL she’s lucky you work at all
“Hay I need to be sober to work. We both got problems.”
There’s some kind of correlation between how little some places pay and their complete lack of professionalism. Something similar caused a walkout of all staff in a steakhouse I worked at when I was a kid.
The owner lost the business shortly afterward.
and i thought $25/hr was bad LOL
