Let's talk about vegan rep in media.

Vegan characters:

  • Jessica Cruz in DC Super Hero Girls (2019): Jessica– Green Lantern– is. Though she's friends with omnis (and has a particularly close friendship with resident carnivore, Pamela), it's also shown that she's dedicated to veganism activism and animal welfare/animal rights. It even got to the point that she couldn't work at a taco store because serving meat repulsed her, until she found out that the "meat" was actually plant based (because meat is too expensive for the company).
  • The Proud Family: The Kwanzaa episode features a vegan character. Extra surprising for an early 2000s show.

Vegetarian:

  • In DC comics, Zatanna, Connor Hawke (who is also a Buddhist), Animal Man, Damian Wayne (Robin), and Wonder Woman have been shown to be vegetarian in various comics. With Wonder Woman, it's inconsistent and usually ignored. With Zatanna, Damian, Animal Man, and Connor, it's a reoccurring element. Raven also used to be vegetarian in the 80s because her character was influenced by Hindu themes (Raven herself is not Hindu), but that's been lost over the decades.
  • Scarlet Witch from Marvel comics is a vegetarian.
  • Shaggy from Scooby Doo is vegetarian in most media made from the late 90s to late 2000s. This was mandated by his voice actor, who refused to voice him unless he was vegetarian or vegan. Unfortunately, this has been scrapped in many newer incarnations, including the popular Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated show.
  • Beast Boy in various media: Ever since the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon, Beast Boy has largely been depicted as vegetarian or vegan. He is usually vegetarian on paper, but he shows signs if being closer to vegan in some comics (such as drinking plant-based dairy or when Peta used him in promotional material for kids). He's also explictly vegan in the Teen Titans YA graphic novels.
  • Steven Universe: In Steven Universe Future, Steven becomes a vegetarian as a teen… probably? The show is actually inconsistent if he actually stays vegetarian or not.

Oops, the post should say “vegetarian rep”. I was gonna post on the vegan sub at first, but decided to expand the thread because there’s not much vegan rep (and because vegetarian characters often are treated like they’re plant based).

    Edit:

I forgot Sue Ellen from *Arthur* and from Sharon *Braceface*.
