Our critic dines at a home from home for Dublin’s French diners and delights in the classic offering

What’s that thing about hiding in plain sight? I must have walked past Chez Max dozens of times this year alone, and been aware of its existence forever, but, until last week, I had never eaten there. And then, in the space of a week, a young French man living in Dublin says he rates it as properly authentic, and someone else tells me that when she worked with the French Embassy in Dublin, it was the staff’s preferred restaurant if they needed a taste of home. I take these snippets of information as a sign to make a booking.
A bewildering array of menus populates the restaurant’s website, with a plethora of deals available depending on the size of your party and the time of day you want to eat. If it’s your job to organise any kind of Christmas gathering, Chez Max is worth considering as the food offering will appeal to all-comers.
