Does this broccoli just need more time or am I doing something wrong? It seems really thin. 8b so it's already getting really warm out so I'm wondering if that could be it as well. I am fertilizing weekly with the liquid espoma green bottle

  1. It is starting to bolt, you can still eat it right now, but in a few days it will start growing yellow flowers..

Its beginning to flower, you need to eat that Asap

    It’s ready for harvest.

Broccoli is hard and I’ve never been able to grow crazy, grocery store sized heads.

Damn it. That’s what I was wanting to hear the least lol. Thank you everyone, harvest it is

Don’t feel bad, broccoli is tricky. Try again as a fall crop! I find it much easier.

The flowers are tasty and edible but yes that better to harvest now and if you are lucky you’ll be blessed with side shoots for some time to come.

Anyone have tricks for growing massive broccoli heads?

It will start to bolt like this when the soil temps get too warm. You may want to check your growing season for broccoli as it generally grows best in cooler temps. I’m in 8b (Central Texas) and it has gotten really warm here in the last month. I pulled what was left of mine about early March as I noticed it starting to separate.

Looks like broccolini, which is also delicious 😋

  9. Some varieties of broccoli grow like yours rather than a large head. Eat it now before it bolts!

You need to pick it right now. It will flower in 2 days and be useless

Your broccoli looks so much better than mine. Mine almost immediately bolted. I have no idea why.

If your 8b but closer to or in Florida, it needs midday shade. I found out the hard way a few years back. Once I placed it on the western side of my house and it got some shade, I started getting huge heads.

I found my cauliflower and brocolli did this too, it seemed to “skip” the classic bunched up look you see at the shops and went straight to flower like in your picture, apparently it’s a nutritional issue? Needed more fertiliser application through the growing stages, someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

  14. Thanks for posting to give me the motivation I need to pull my broccoli. (Way less developed than yours). I’m late on this crop again this spring in north Texas even tho I started earlier than ever. Fall only it is I guess

If you do let it flower, it’s also absolutely beautiful and the pollinators LOVE it!

  16. It needs less time.

This is past the “bud” stage when broccoli is normally harvested. Once you see the “beads” of broccoli starting to get loose, that means it’s ready to harvest and will not get any bigger but will just start to bolt.

It’s still tasty and perfectly good to eat at this stage though
