Allora, a new upscale Italian restaurant, opens in Downtown Grand Rapids this Wednesday, offering a “Coastal Italian philosophy” with sustainable ingredients.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A new upscale Italian restaurant is set to open its doors in Downtown Grand Rapids this week, bringing Mediterranean flavors to the city’s culinary landscape.

Allora, an 85-plus seat restaurant at 201 Monroe Ave., N.W., begins dinner service Wednesday at the entrance to the newly revitalized Lyon Square and riverfront area.

“Allora invites its guests to connection, to storytelling, to hospitality and to humble indulgence,” said owner Betsy DeVos.

DeVos said the restaurant aims to offer what its leadership describes as a “Coastal Italian philosophy” featuring sustainable, seasonal ingredients.

“I want guests to feel transported — like they’re dining in a hidden trattoria overlooking the Mediterranean,” Executive Chef Luke VerHulst said in a statement.

The menu will regularly change to highlight seasonal offerings, providing guests with a “feel-good, taste-amazing experience,” according to VerHulst.

AHC Hospitality will manage the establishment under General Manager Parker Bulliment.

A notable feature of the restaurant is the return of “Open Water NO. 24,” the oil painting by Brooklyn artist Ran Ortner that earned top honors at the first ArtPrize competition. The artwork previously hung in Reserve Wine & Food, which occupied the location until May 2024.

Allora will operate Tuesday through Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The restaurant’s name comes from an Italian word that serves as a conversational bridge, similar to “well,” “so,” or “and then” in English — reflecting the establishment’s focus on hospitality and connection.

“More than just a restaurant, Allora is a place where culinary artistry meets warm hospitality, creating an unforgettable dining experience that blends tradition, innovation, and community at every table,” read a release from the restaurant.
